This concept explores the limits to consumerism and sustainability when it comes to outer space. Space is truly the most unforgiving environment and is truly mankinds final frontier. Unlike every other natural environment which humans experience, (land, air and ocean), space forces mankind to be continuously innovative and ultra-sustainable. This is due to the absolute lack of natural resources as well as the limits of our technology.
I have conveyed this concept by creating a ‘solar system’ with embroidery hoops hung from fishing wire and countless techniques to represent the planets and trash surrounding them. These techniques include naturally dying fabrics with turmeric, blueberries and beetroot, hand, machine and sashiko embroidery, beading, molas techniques, heat set thermoplastics, foiling, transfer printing and liquid latex. I have combined these techniques to create a visually striking wall hanging, conveying a message while remaining aesthetically pleasing. I have hung these embroidery hoops over a piece of black tulle in which the ‘trash’ has been adhered to. This allows for movement within my piece, creating visual depth and contrasting against the bright colours. In conclusion, the dynamic interaction of these elements symbolise the ongoing battle of anthropogenic impacts on our universe.
