‘Amour’ is a voluminous and luxurious high-low dress, featuring heavy embellishments. In creating my design, I drew inspiration from three key focus areas. Zuhair Murad’s 2016 spring couture collection, “Amour en Cage”, demonstrated dramatic elegance across most of his designs. I have featured this within my project through the extravagant hourglass shape and breathtaking silhouette. I have drawn further inspiration from this collection in choosing the main fabric, mint green cotton sateen, the coral and pink colour palette for the embellishments as well as the innovative lattice design constructed from silk organza and cotton sateen. The vibrant colours and patterns present in Venetian Murano glass have directly inspired the colour palette for my marble-dyed polyester lining. Additionally, I replicated the glass making technique of millefiori flowers when creating the laser cut organza flowers featured heavily of the bottom of my garment. My historical inspiration, 1930’s surrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli has influenced the harsh lines paired with soft round edges present in my project, in particular the creation of a plunged V-neckline. Shiaparelli’s intricate designs additionally inspired the floral embroidery patterns and cascading beading displayed on the front of my project, creating a heavily detailed garment.
